Pre-surgical exam is also known as Pre-anesthetic testing. This includes blood work, urine analysis and ECG to spot early signs of countless diseases and can get a better idea of how anesthesia may affect your pet during the surgery. If the veterinarian sees anything concerning, they may cancel or postpone the surgery to deal with the problem first to ensure that the surgery and anesthesia is safe and as successful as possible for your pet.

We highly recommend and sometimes it’s even mandatory to do the pre surgery testing for older animals as the risk of underlying conditions or possible anesthetic complications are much higher in senior pets.

Any surgical procedure that requires your pet to undergo anesthesia, we highly recommend to perform the pre anesthetic testing. Bloodwork is never harmful and the best way to ensure a safe anesthesia and happy recovery from surgery for your pet. 

Absolutely, some other minor procedure can be performed while your pet is under anesthesia such as:

• Nail trimming
• Ear cleaning
• Small lump removal
• Tear duct flush
• Tooth extraction
• Teeth cleaning
• Microchip implantation

If you would like to have an additional procedure performed while your pet is under anesthesia, please let us know in advance. Knowing ahead of time allows us to give you a cost estimate and allot the proper time for your pet’s surgery.

It is very likely for your pet to feel discomfort or pain at the surgical site or elsewhere due to the healing process. Our veterinarians will prescribe the pain-relieving medications and post-surgery pet care instructions. Do not use any non-prescribed human pain medication for your pet. Human medications can be lethal to pets.
